The Ritz Paris is the hotel that gave the English language an adjective. Founded in 1898 by César Ritz, reopened in 2016 after a $450 million renovation that took four years, it remains the most storied address in European hospitality. This is where Coco Chanel lived for over thirty years. Where Hemingway claimed to have 'liberated' the bar. Where Proust wrote and the Duke of Windsor held court.

The renovation, led by architect Thierry Despont, was described by the hotel as 'modernisation with discretion.' That's exactly right — the Ritz feels both timeless and alive, never frozen in amber.

Field Notes

The Room
Request a suite overlooking Place Vendôme — the view of the column at night is worth the premium. The Coco Chanel Suite is the most requested, but the Windsor Suite is quieter.
The Bar
Bar Hemingway is tiny — only 30 seats. Go at 6pm on a weekday for the best chance of a stool. Colin Peter Field's cocktails are legendary. Order the Serendipity.
The Pool
The Ritz Club spa houses one of Paris's most beautiful indoor pools. It's vast, candlelit, and virtually empty at midday.
The Table
L'Espadon under Chef Eugénie Béziat blends French technique with African-inspired flavors. The tasting menu is the move. Book the garden room.
The Clipper Detail
The Salon Proust serves the city's most decadent afternoon tea. It's where Marcel Proust reportedly came for his midnight snacks. The madeleines are, naturally, transcendent.
